xpatofthemind Living Daylights has such a pure and haunting sound, driving but still lyrical. Her sax work floats over a relentless rhythm section. Every track will take you somewhere different. And while "Spaghetti Western" was definitely the up-front sexy sell of this album, with repeated listening "Trauma and Discourse" just unfolds more and more layers. Favorite track: Spaghetti Western.

about

Seattle’s LIVING DAYLIGHTS features Jessica Lurie (alto/tenor sax, flute), Arne Livingston (electric bass), and Dale Fanning (drums). This explosive jazz trio is one of the most exciting new touring jazz groups in the country today, mixing the fun of funk and soul-jazz grooves with the edgy punch and teeth of the avant-garde.They tour nationally and internationally, at festivals and clubs, opening for and playing with the likes of John Scofield, Groove Collective, Robert Walter, Wayne Shorter, Maceo Parker, and Soulive.

500 Pound Cat is the band's second release, a "hard-driving, steamy & funky jazz from Seattle's latest power trio (sax, bass & drums) - their energy lies somewhere between Nirvana & The Charlie Hunter Quartet."

The Living Daylights are a much-compacted powerhouse, a lean trio of Seattle-based jazz players who've been privy to electric fusion as much as bebop. Saxophonist Jessica Lurie plays tight-lipped long lines when Arne Livingston's electric bass is in the spotlight, but Lurie also blows away scales with fervor when the trio is romping across freer-sounding jazz-scapes. The group prefers the faster, hoppier end of the electric jazz scale, managing to hit on the "one" even while spinning in frenetic cycles. But they also conjure the Balkan region with tunes like "Trauma and Discourse," with drummer Dale Fanning playing polyrhythms that dizzy the ear during Lurie's alto sax-led melodic contortions. --Andrew Bartlett
